Sleep is one of the most important components of your overall health. But do you know what’s one of the biggest factors influencing the quality of your sleep?

Well, it’s your mattress. And that’s the reason you need to give it more attention than you probably do.

Still don’t believe us? Let us walk you through some common ways in which your mattress can affect your sleep and thus your health.

Stress

A good night’s sleep can greatly help your stress levels. But if the mattress you sleep on is too old and doesn’t offer quality sleep, you may not experience any positive changes with respect to your stress levels.

So it’s considered a good idea to replace your mattress, especially if it’s older than 8 years as at that point it may stop helping you with your stress levels completely.

Allergies

An old, poor mattress can be home to millions of tiny dust mites and bacteria that cause many different types of allergies. There’s a reason about 20 million Americans end up with one of these allergies every year.

While the Better Sleep Council does say that period cleaning of your mattress may help prevent this risk to some extent, mattresses that are too old may still pose a great risk of allergies even if they are cleaned from time to time.

Back Pain

A poor mattress can wreak havoc on your back’s health, leading to issues like severe back pain. However, it’s not only a very old mattress that may cause back pain, but also a new one if you choose the wrong mattress.

An ultra-plush mattress, for one, might sound very tempting to sleep on, but it can be a very bad option for your back over time.

This is the reason it’s recommended to sleep on and test the mattress before buying it.

Unusual Fatigue

Feeling fatigued when you haven’t got enough sleep or are overworked is understandable, but sometimes people end up with an unusual feeling of fatigue even when they are getting enough sleep.

In such cases, their mattress might be the culprit. Older mattresses tend to offer a much lower quality of sleep than their newer counterparts.

Body Aches

Many people avoid the lumps that form on their mattress as it gets old, but they fail to realize that it means the springs of the mattress aren’t functioning as they should and harming their back.

This might not seem like a big deal initially but over time might lead to issues like poor sleep and body aches.

Insomnia

While insomnia is often caused due to a variety of factors, the quality of sleep tends to be one of the most important of them.

And when it comes to the quality of sleep, as many as 9 in every 10 people believe that the mattress you sleep on plays a crucial role.

This is especially true if you find yourself sleeping in only one position on your mattress, which may mean that your mattress isn’t offering enough support to your body when sleeping.
